“Tribes and Heroes, Nations and Messiahs”
When the going gets really rough, though, people begin to package up their hopes and dreams into a special kind of story- they invent superhero stories. Try reading the Book of Daniel that way! People naturally move on to picture an ultimate hero who might save them one day, through divine intervention. Such an expected hero for Israel began was called Messiah, but Israel was not alone in their hopes. Many other cultures have Messiahs- true ones and false ones, but Messiah stories and hero stories hold people together when they are in jeopardy:
Jeopardy category: Tribal names: The answer: Tatanka Yotanka, Tashunka Witco, Victorio and Satanta. Question: name four significant heroes of American History. Not Washington, Jefferson or even General Lee?
Tatanka Yotanka? American hero? Tatanka? From Dances With Wolves? it means bison. Tatanka Yotanka, the Sitting Bull, Holy Man of the Hunkpapas of the Teton Sioux. Tashunka Witco- Crazy Horse, Red Cloud of the Oglala.Have we heard the hero stories of Black Kettle, Tall Bull and Roman Nose of the Cheyenne nation, or Little Raven the Arapaho? What of Satanta and Lone Wolf, or the great statesman of the Kiowas- Kicking Bird. What of Cochise, Victorio and Geronimo of the Apache, what of Manuelito and the Long Walk of the Diné- the Navajo?
