“Tribes and Heroes, Nations and Messiahs”
Jeopardy? Jeopardy category: Tribal names: The answer: Judah, Benjamin, Reuben, Gad, Issachar, Zebulon, Naphtali, Simeon, Dan, Asher, Ephraim, Manasseh. The question is? What are the names of the twelve tribes of Israel?
Our faith came from tribal culture! Our Bible spends a great deal of parchment and ink relating the story of that great dysfunctional family of Abraham and Sarah all the way down to Jacob, his two wives, his two slave girls, and those dozen boys and a daughter. According to the story, the boys would become the patriarchs of the tribes of Israel. Blood is thicker than political alliances. So Israel’s political story is about family relationships between tribes under one God who blesses them forever. Until we can do much more archaeological DNA testing we don’t even know for certain if these stories are historically accurate. It doesn’t matter: they are theologically accurate.
