“Tribes and Heroes, Nations and Messiahs”
Within two years of this conversation, the lands of Chief Joseph were invaded, and he took up his mantle like an American Moses and he led his people in their own exodus, eastward across Idaho and into Montana, toward Canada, with two American Armies in hot pursuit. These refugees struggled for months- 300 warriors plus women, children and all their possessions, eluding the American army in the mountains for 1300 miles. Finally, almost by luck, the army caught them, and Joseph gave up his rifle.
“It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever. (Brown 328-9)
